A.R.E.S.
Amateur Radio Emergency Service
The Amateur Radio Emergency Service© (A.R.E.S.) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment, with their local A.R.E.S. leadership, for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes.
Every licensed amateur is eligible to apply for membership in A.R.E.S. and training may be required or desired to participate fully.
Because A.R.E.S. is an Amateur Radio program, only licensed radio amateurs are eligible for membership. The possession of emergency-powered equipment is desirable, but is not a requirement for membership

Other a.r.e.s. Activities
Besides serving during disasters, ARES volunteers are used in numerous community events such as off–road races, marathons, fairs and other events where radio communications are needed. Every year the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay, 120 miles of pavement, 20 stages, over 8,000 runners, guests, family members, and support staff, is manned by ARES volunteers who handle all the communications for race officials.
